Synthetic Gene Drives: Genetic Engineering Goes Wild

New gene editing techniques have made it possible to build human-designed, synthetic gene drives where a genetically engineered trait can be deliberately spread through an entire population by releasing only a few engineered organisms. Proposals are rapidly advancing to use synthetic gene drives to alter wild and domestic populations, which may impact ecosystems and biodiversity as well as agriculture, human security and conservation.
